What Is Vegan Leather?

By Alexandra Gardose │ October.05.2023

Vegan leather is synthetic, or “faux” leather made from agricultural waste products and sustainable biomaterials. It can also be made from synthetic polymers like polyurethane and other recyclable materials.

Vegan leather has gained popularity because it is an alternative to animal leather (and is made without using any animal products). So, not only is it stylish and sustainable, but it’s also ethically conscious. Plus, with so many materials to choose from, it’s easier than ever to get the look and feel you want without causing harm to animals.

Materials  Commonly Used To Make Vegan Leather

The eco-friendly alternative to conventional leather is produced using agricultural waste, sustainable bio-materials, and polymers. You can rest easy knowing that most vegan leather is environmental, and recyclable – meaning you don’t need to compromise on ethical values.

Common Vegan Leather Materials:

recycled plastic polymers, polyurethane, silicone, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cork, cactus, kombucha cellulose/SCOBY, pineapples, mushrooms

Popular 2024 Vegan Leather Designers:

Stella McCartney, Matt & Nat, Nanushka, Pixie Mood, Watson & Wolfe, Doshi, Labante

Vegan Leather Drawbacks

Vegan leather has a few drawbacks when compared to traditional leather. Firstly, it’s often made from PVC, a type of plastic that’s less durable than leather. Because of this, vegan leather items may not last as long. Secondly, not all vegan leather is biodegradable (especially if they contain high concentrations of PVC).

Vegan Leather Benefits

Vegan leather is a cruelty-free option as it does not harm any animals during the production process. Unlike traditional leather, there is no toxic tanning involved. Additionally, vegan leather can be produced in a range of qualities and colors that traditional leather cannot provide, and is more affordable than real leather.
