Unfortunately for some of us, winter can mean experiencing dry eyes, or for some more serious, long-term cases, dry eye syndrome. If you suffer from this problem and wear eye contact lenses, here are 3 types of lenses you should go for to prevent your dry-eye problem:
1.Soft Lenses
Soft contact lenses (as opposed to hard lenses, or also known as, rigid gas permeable lenses – RGPs) are often better for dry eyes because they hold more water, are more flexible, and are replaced more often (dailies), causing less build-up of deposits, explains Dr. Baik.
Dr. Gary Heiting, O.D., explains that silicone hydrogel lenses are advanced soft lenses that allow more oxygen to pass through the lenses. With more oxygen passing through the lenses, the likelihood of red eyes, eye discomfort and blurred vision decreases.
Stephanie Watson, in Healthline explains that contact lenses with high-water contentare more likely to cause dry eye, than low-water content lenses. When you first put in high-water content lenses, they quickly send moisture to your eye, however they dry out faster – whereas low-content water lenses do not.
Dr. Ann Marie Griff, O.D, recommends gels and ointments over regular over-the-counter eye drops because they stay in the eyes longer. In addition, long-term prescription eye drops , and eye drops without preservatives are also recommended for dry eyes.
